Wilmot was born in Deerfield, Illinois and came to Colorado in 1870. He operated freighting and mining businesses until 1875, when he settled in the mountains of Jefferson County and gave the Evergreen area its name sometime prior to 1880.
In 1875 Dwight Wilmot acquired a large ranch in the Buffalo Park area where Evergreen High School and Wilmot Elementary School are currently located.
Wilmot was appointed to be County Commissioner in 1882 to fill a vacated seat; elected to a full term in 1893. In 1907 he purchased land that would be sold to the Bear Creek Cemetery Association in 1907. One of three founding directors of the Bear Creek Cemetery.
