Meet Beth Foster

Written by Scott Gibson on .

Beth Foster’s bucket list currently has two items on it.

“I’ve always wanted to live in a house by the water,” she says. “And another goal of mine is to take a cruise on The Mississippi River from the very top to the very bottom, Duluth to New Orleans.”

The reason her list is so short compared to most people’s is because she’s managed to fulfill most of her other goals as she’s gone along. And the list is about to get even shorter, as Beth prepares to move into a new home in Evergreen that will place her—you guessed it—right on the banks of a creek.

Beth has lived in Evergreen for almost four years, and has no plans to move elsewhere. “I knew that limits my options for living on the water,” she explains. “It was either going to be a lake or a stream. And I’m very happy with my new home. This is it. Evergreen is my community, and this is where I’m staying!”

It’s a far cry from where Beth started out—or where she traveled prior to landing in Colorado. Born in Moscow, Idaho, she grew up in Los Angeles and spent a good deal of time traveling the world with her geologist father. When she was 12, they lived in Adelaide, Australia for two years.

“I attended a girls’ boarding school there,” she says, “And I loved it. I also had the opportunity to explore The Outback a lot with my dad, sometimes for weeks at a time. We went four-wheeling across the landscape—there were no roads—as my father sought out old copper mines. He had developed a technology that provided new ways to mine for additional copper.”

At 18, Beth finally landed in Denver. She attended Red Rocks Community College, majoring in geology, then took a break to get married and have her son. She returned to Red Rocks as a staff member where she remained for 30 years in her position as Coordinator of Student Publications. And because being an employee there allowed her to take classes at no charge, she eventually graduated with an Associate Arts Degree in Theatre. “It only took me sixteen years to get my degree,” she laughs. “But I’m very proud of the fact that I went back and did it.”

After retiring from Red Rocks in 2008, Beth became the Communications and Marketing Manager at Mount Evans Home Health Care and Hospice, where she is still working today. “I’m responsible for public and media relations, creating and disseminating promotional materials. Basically, it’s my job to get the word out about the good work Mount Evans does in the mountain communities of Jefferson, Clear Creek, Gilpin, and Park counties.”

When she started the job, Beth was living in Bailey and commuting to work. She made the decision to relocate to Evergreen for two reasons. “I needed to ease the commute,” she explains. “And by then my son was grown and gone. I no longer wanted to drive 40 miles home each night to an empty house.”

Beth has been able to put her theatre degree to use as co-founder and producer for One Night Stand Theater, a small company that performs staged readings at Vintage Theatre in Aurora. She is also a judge for the Colorado Theatre Guild’s Henry Awards, meaning that she sees between 70 and 80 plays a year all across Colorado. “In venues as close as Center/Stage in Evergreen and as far away as the Repertory Theater in Creede. I love road trips, short and long!”

Additionally, Beth is a member of Blue Spruce Kiwanis and coordinator of the club’s Evening Group. She’s involved in various fundraising activities and community service projects and is a co-advisor of the Evergreen High School Key Club, a Kiwanis-sponsored service group for teens. “We recently accompanied the kids to Denver Rescue Mission, where they served lunch and helped prepare Thanksgiving dinner for hundreds of individuals.”

She recently celebrated her birthday by incorporating it into Mountain Resource Center’s Empty Bowls fundraiser. Guests were invited to Go Paint in downtown Evergreen where each person was asked to design and paint a clay bowl which would then be sold to raise money for community members in need. “Karen Belmont, who owns Go Paint, donated the art supplies and the firing of the finished bowls, and Mimi Nelson who runs In Good Taste Catering provided the food at my party. I love that I live in a community where so many residents are generous with their time, their goods, and their talent!” she says.

Beth is also currently settling into her new home right on Bergen Creek with her two orange cats. It’s a safe bet that once she’s done that, she’ll find new things to add to her bucket list.
