Ed Skaff
1934 -
Born in Springer, New Mexico. He graduated with a B.S. from the University Of Colorado School Of Pharmacy in 1959 and was employed by McDermott Drug Company in Boulder after graduation.
Owned and operated Evergreen Drug from 1962-2005. His interest in retail business began early when he worked in his father’s grocery store in the San Luis Valley of southern Colorado.
He purchased Evergreen Drug Store in 1962 when it was still in its Main Street location (in 2011 occupied by the Little Bear). From 1963 to 1974 the store was located in the Hiwan Village Shopping Center next to Safeway and the Post Office. Evergreen Drug Company moved with Safeway to the present location of Evergreen Discount Liquors in 1974.
"My goal was to make Evergreen Drug Company 'The Best Store of its Kind.' I stocked the store with every kind of merchandise, including many items that our customers requested, making it a fun and unique place to shop. The wide variety of merchandise is what created our logo 'More Than Just a Drug Store.' The pharmacy career brought me satisfaction and joy for 44 years before I decided to sell the prescription files to Safeway and to make Evergreen Discount Liquors a state-of-the-art liquor store in 2005."
In 2005 the Chamber of Commerce honored Skaff with the Lifetime Achievement Award. Skaff was also involved with the operation of two other mountain drug stores: Aspen Park Drug Company in Conifer and Clear Creek Pharmacy in Idaho Springs. He was an active member of the Evergreen Kiwanis Club and Chamber of Commerce. He was on the Board of Directors of the Colorado National Bank of Evergreen, The Development Council for the University of Colorado School of Pharmacy and on the Board of Trustees for the University of Colorado.
The new Pharmacy School at Anschutz Medical Campus at Fitzsimmons will open in 2011 and will name a room in his honor.
