Meet Tom Hushen

Written by Linda Kirkpatrick on .

Tom is a natural ambassador for Evergreen.  He's loved Evergreen ever since moving here from Omaha in the late '90s, especially the diversity of the community when it comes to age and interest level as well as backgrounds of those who live here.

He's a techie, having worked in computer technology for large corporations in the past, now comfortable with designing websites for smaller local companies and nonprofit organizations in our mountain area.  Tom has designed and maintained websites for about 10 nonprofits in town at no charge.  "It's a labor of love," he explains.

His marketing business – Breakout Marketing – subsidizes his primary occupation, which is real estate sales. He operates under the name of Bedrock Properties, representing buyers and sellers as far away as Ft. Collins and Fairplay.

He's best known for his volunteer work, having served on the board of Mountain Metro Association of Realtors for four years and as chair this year (2011) until next September when he hands over the gavel.  As part of the Evergreen Rodeo Association, he's served on the parade committee and keeps up the website for Evergreen's signature event.

He's been active with the children's Western Wish Foundation since 2007, helping rodeos provide VIP treatment for those with special needs.  The Evergreen Rodeo, for instance, singles out one family with a special-needs child and treats that child royally during Rodeo Weekend, including putting the child on a horse for the parade and rodeo festivities.

Other boards he's served on include the Evergreen Music Festival and the Evergreen Newcomers and Neighbors where he and Ann have made lots of friends they enjoy doing things with privately.  He's also been involved in the planning and organizing of the Kids' Rodeo Stampede held at the Rodeo Grounds.  He's helped with the Polar Plunge each New Year's Day and has taken the plunge himself each year.

In 2009 Tom was named Volunteer of the Year by the Evergreen Chamber of Commerce.  Twice he was nominated as Ambassador of the Year, a role in which he officially carried the name "Ambassador," helping new members feel comfortable integrating into the business community.  "I like to help people," he says.  He's a natural at networking professionals.

He's such an understated sort of guy, and we're lucky to have him representing our community on so many fronts!

He and Ann have been married 45 years and have two sons – one in Spokane and one in Australia.  Their travels take them to Australia once each year.  Tom enjoys outdoorsy activities:  skiing, climbing fourteeners, fly fishing, and hiking the Colorado Trail.  Together they enjoy "gourmet camping" and cross-country skiing with other couples they've met through Newcomers.
